Theobalds Farmhouse Garden is an award-winning organic Arts and Crafts style garden, which has been created since 1999 by designer-owner Alison Green.
The main gardens are arranged around a central lawn with fourteen distinctive colour-themed borders and rooms, each unique in its design and plant palette, from the brilliant and bold to the soft and serene, offering visitors a wealth of horticultural inspiration.
Our philosophy is to respect and value nature and to maintain a balance in all that we do. We garden organically, always plant with insects and wildlife in mind and try to plant with the cycles of the moon as much as time permits.
The garden borders are predominantly filled with perennial plants, with structure from trees, shrubs, topiary and evergreens. Our planting style is successional, using annuals and exotics to extend the season, cannas and dahlias for that 'wow factor' and we’re always searching for new and unusual seeds to sow in our greenhouse.
Alison continues to make changes to existing schemes. New plants are regularly added to take the garden forward and fresh designs are introduced from year to year.
For 2025 there are two new crescents in the spiral garden, cleared of grass for spring bulbs, followed by annuals sown for pollinators. The lower water gardens are also being developed with a new Japanese theme.
The Garden is full of wildlife and sings with the sound of nesting birds in spring. With concerns about the state of insect populations and wildlife in general, new areas are being planted with wild flowers for pollinators to increase biodiversity and indigenous wild flowers are being added to the wildflower meadows. Several years ago, we also become beekeepers and currently have three hives.

The gardens open for groups by appointment in specific weeks from April to September. Individuals and small groups can be added to existing group bookings.

A truly beautiful and well loved garden covering two acres. There are circular court yards, gravel gardens, meadow and formal planting. In fact something for everyone. Have been inspired!
